Paving work on a portion of the Cleburne County section of the Chief Ladiga Trail is delayed because the Cleburne County Commission received no bids Monday night on a contract to pave 4.5 miles of the 9-mile section.
The commission had expected bids after several contractors expressed interest in the project. But Cleburne County Engineer Shannon Robbins said concerns about access to the trail across a creek might be complicating the process.
Robbins said preparations are under way to re-bid the project in a way that will ensure it runs smoothly.
As we speak, were getting stuff ready to send to ALDOT to get everything finished, Robbins said Tuesday, referring to the other half of the trail.
Its disappointing but there wasnt anything we could do about it.
Robbins said new bids will be received Oct. 10. This time, both sections will be bid together, he said.
Bidding both of the jobs together might attract more interest from companies unimpressed with the first job, said Ryan Robertson, chairman of the Cleburne County Commission.
Its not a really huge, big job. Its hard to find contractors to do that, Robertson said.
Originally, the last 4.5 miles were to be bid in early 2007 and paving work was expected to begin in October.
In August, a $110,045 contract was awarded to Trussville-based Bob Smith Construction Inc. for construction on a 212-foot bridge Cleburne Countys section of the trail.
Construction on that bridge is set to begin in the next two months, Robbins said, with a goal for completion by the end of the year.
Over the years, Cleburne County has secured more than $600,000 from the Alabama Department of Transportation for its portion of the Chief Ladiga Trail project. It received $250,000 to surface four miles along the west end of the trail, and $386,400 to complete the trails eastern section, including the dilapidated bridge.
