update on paving? |
Lead | |
|
I'm planning on making a trip home tomorrow and a visit to the Chief Ladiga as well. I've heard varying reports from the entire thing's paved now, to none of the last stretch of 8 miles has been started yet. I'm hoping to get some good photos. My old biking wxman site seems a bit outdated! (and it's moved, actually).

I just called the Piedmont Welcome Center, and they told me that the paving has not been started because it has been so muddy. However, the bridges are completed. I, too, am planning to ride the trail tomorrow, and try to hit GA again. Last time, I got within a mile, and got so bogged down in mud, I finally gave up and turned around. The Welcome Center said there's going to be some big event with the Governors in July, and that the trail should be complete well before then, weather permitting.

Interesting. Last month was supposed to have been one of the driest Marches on record. Not enough rain for farmers, but enough to make the CLT muddy?

some portions out there are gouged out a bit, and those holes take forever to dry up. i've seen it stay muddy in the middle of the summer for a week or so after just one popcorn thunderstorm.

Hey Guys!
Just a semi-update from yesterday's (4/15) driving tour. Lots of grading and gravel (recycled asphalt?) from state line west to at least CR 70 crossing, possibly farther. All (?) stone columns for Coke arch and picnic shelter (?) complete, plus lots of grading for very large parking area (?). No sign of paving from state line to mile marker 9 (bridge at Cleburne / Calhoun line). Solo and Adze www.pinhotitrailalliance.org |

I've got a "end to end and back" trip planned for this weekend (4/21 & 22) starting a the Alabama end... on road bikes. I'm alittle unclear as to the sections of trail that we should avoid on roadies, and the suggested detours to keep clear of them.
Does anyone have a GPS track of those portions? This Michigan boy could get lost? And the dude from Arizona won't be much help! Any directions would be gratefully accepted! m |

To Bypass the unpaved and impassable bridges of the Chief Ladiga Trail in Alabama follow these directions:
Turn South on (unmarked) Hardin Road at Esom Hill Trailhead Entrance (that is left if you are coming from Cedartown, and right if you are coming from the Esom Hill Trailhead entrance) Go .2 miles to unmarked Esom Hill Road (U.S. Post Office on left) Turn right, go 6/10 miles to Georgia-Alabama State Line (Cleburne County, Alabama); Road becomes County Road (CR) 49> Go 3.8 miles, angle right on CR 70 Go 6.2 miles (over the mountain at 3.7 miles from turn) to Seaboard Drive on Left (there is a sign for biking there) Go .1 mile, road crosses Trail. The Trail is 8 feet wide at this point and paved Turn right to go toward Piedmont, Alabama From there the Trail is paved all the way to Weaver, Alabama (outside Anniston) Link for detour around the gap between Cedartown and the current end of the Comet at Grady Rd: www.pathfoundation.org/pa...rRoute.pdf |

Thanks a ton! I'll see if between Mapquest and my GPS app I can load this up. That way even when I'm soaked in endorphines I can follow the little arrow!

i have it on good authority* that the CLT is paved all the way to the Alabama line.
outstanding! disclaimers: 1. if you ride near the end of the CLT, and ride off of an unfinished bridge, it is not my responsibility - i have not seen the finished trail myself. although i was never convicted, it is best if i stay out of alabama. 2. the good authority is none other than Maniac. he says to be sure and tell everyone he is down to (up to?) 178 pounds. must be the clean living and bbq sandwiches. jim |

Paving update | ||
|
There are no unfinished bridges between the AL/GA line and Piedmont on the Chief Ladega Trail. The last one was finished more than a month ago and is totally safe to cross. Paving has recently been completed from the state line to Cleburne County Road 230, about 1/4 mile east of the bridge. There are no marker posts yet but the shoulders are complete too. My girlfriend and I rode from Piedmont to the state line on mtn bikes yesterday. The unpaved 4 mile section is easy on the mtn bike but rocky and not doable on a road bike. The Gateway Park at the state line looks about 3/4 completed.
